The Challenge: Overcoming Two Decades of Tech Debt

Shaolin Kickboxing was operating on a website that was effectively a time capsule. Originally developed in the early 2000s on the DotNetNuke (DNN) CMS, the platform had become a significant liability. Because the version of DNN in use was no longer consistently maintained, the site suffered from frequent technical breaks, security vulnerabilities, and a total lack of support.

Managing content had become an impossible task for the staff. The outdated backend meant even simple text updates were difficult, and the unstable architecture threatened the data integrity of the club's growing membership base. Axelerate was commissioned for a high-stakes digital rescue: a complete visual overhaul and the migration of over 500 member records and 20 years of content from this obsolete environment into a secure, future-proof ecosystem.

Phase 1: Modernising the Visual Identity

The original site lacked the energy and professionalism of the club itself. Our design team created a sleek, high-impact interface that reflects the discipline and intensity of kickboxing. We prioritised a dark-mode aesthetic with high-contrast typography to ensure the brand felt modern and authoritative, finally matching the prestige of the club.

Phase 2: Technical Membership Architecture

At the heart of this project was the transition from a "closed," unstable system to a robust WordPress-based membership engine. This required a complex technical setup to handle the club's specific operational needs while eliminating the reliability issues of the past.

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) & Member Portals

We implemented a granular RBAC system, allowing the client to define different access levels for students, instructors, and administrators.

Member Dashboard: Students can now view their training resources, update details, and manage renewals.

Administrative Oversight: Staff can monitor membership status, individual logins, and financial health via a centralised, intuitive dashboard—no longer hindered by an uncooperative CMS.

Automated Payment Integration

We integrated a secure payment gateway to replace manual bank transfers and cash payments. The new system supports recurring billing, automated invoicing, and instant notification for failed payments, drastically reducing administrative overhead.

Phase 3: The 500+ Member Migration from DotNetNuke

Migrating data from a two-decade-old DotNetNuke installation presented significant technical hurdles. The data was unstructured and stored in an obsolete format within a database that was increasingly prone to corruption.

Our development team authored custom migration scripts to:

Extract & Clean: Safely extract 500+ records from the unstable DNN database and sanitise the legacy data.

Map: Align legacy data fields with the new WordPress user meta-structure.

Validate: Ensure that all active memberships were transitioned with 100% accuracy, ensuring zero service interruption for the students.
